New and Improved Housing for Sailors on Coronado August 2010

New Housing Breaks Ground on Naval Base Coronado

Coronado, California -- Naval Base Coronado, located on Coronado Island, across the bay from Downtown San Diego, will soon be able to offer more accommodations and amenities for Sailors who have returned from deployment. Groundbreaking begins this month on the new complex, P-742 Bachelor Enlisted Quarters, which will be composed of two towers connected by a common area on the ground floor. The mid-rise towers will have the capacity to house over 1,000 Sailors in dual-occupancy rooms with kitchenettes that will be provided with standard appliances as well as washers and dryers. The facility will also offer a multi-use Community Center and two roof-top lounges with gorgeous views of city and sea. Site development includes a jogging track, par course exercise stations, basketball and volleyball courts, and several picnic pavilions for use by residents, family, and friends. Two convenient lots will offer spaces for over 360 vehicles.

JWDA has teamed with Hensel Phelps Construction Company for this $60,000,000 design-build project. Their proposal was selected from a field of eight teams competing for the work. Designed to achieve a LEED GOLD rating, the project is scheduled for completion in the Spring of 2012.
