Camp Pendleton, California -- Construction is underway for four new MCON Bachelor Enlisted Quarters at MCB Camp Pendleton, California. The BEQ Package 8 initiative is to provide a quality, home-like living environment for single marines. The design aims to create a campus-like facility that achieves a feeling of community. Each building will be a 101,610 SF multi-story reinforced concrete masonry unit structure with 200 two-person rooms. Each module includes a living/sleeping room, shared bathroom area, a service area and two lockable closets. The facilities also include multipurpose community areas and lounges on the first floor. Site development includes 415 off-street parking spaces and a parking structure that will accommodate 1,120 vehicles and 80 motorcycles. JWDA teamed with RJC Architects to provide full architectural and interior design services. The Contractor is a joint-venture with Hensel Phelps Construction and Soltek Pacific for this $120 million design-build project.
BEQ Package 8 is targeting LEED Gold status. The design and construction incorporates sustainable strategies and features to minimize facility energy consumption, conserve resources and minimize adverse affects to the environment and improve user productivity, health and comfort. Systems to be commissioned include HVAC systems and controls, renewable energy systems and domestic hot water systems. In living/sleeping areas, all windows will be tinted with low E exterior glazing and follow ATFP requirements. Roof mounted photovoltaic solar panels with compatible structural support will be provided over the BEQs and community center. The photovoltaic systems' massing, exterior functional aesthetics, and character create a comprehensive and harmonious blend of design features that are sympathetic to the style and context of the installation while not sacrificing the integrity and technical competency of building systems.
Project completion is set for winter quarter of 2011.
