JWDA and Tucker Sadler Architects were selected as two of the top San Diego architecture firms to join the San Diego Center Expansion Team. They will be joining Denver-based Fentress Architects and the San Diego Convention Center Corporation for the design of the nearly 1 million SF expansion. The two locally based firms were selected for their working knowledge of the existing facility, success on past projects with the convention center and experience of key personnel.
JWDA previously completed the design for the sail pavilion added to the roof of the Convention Center that converted the existing outdoor space into an enclosed area for special events.
"We are delighted to work with Fentress Architects on a unique and exciting concept for this landmark expansion. We look forward to supporting them in making this special public place a reality that San Diegans and our guests will enjoy for many years," said Joseph Wong, FAIA, Founding Principal of JWDA.
The proposed conceptual design for the bayside expansion will create, "a sustainable 5-acre waterfront public space, the largest ballroom along the Pacific Coast and the largest contiguous exhibit space west of the Mississippi River." The project is targeting LEED Gold Certification.
