San Diego, California -- "Location, location, location" is usually the first
thing said when undertaking a new domestic venture. The new Ronald
McDonald House at Rady Children's Hospital San Diego boasts this and
more. Located across the street from the hospital atop a 6-story parking
garage the new facility offers 65,000 square-feet of hotel-like
amenities, dedicated to the comfort and solace of families with
seriously ill children. The seeds of the project's origin were sown
after plans for the garage were completed and the ground was ready to be
broken. At that time, it was realized that millions of dollars in
acquisition costs would be saved if the garage could serve more than one
purpose. While many millions dollars were saved, it took quite a bit of
coordination and planning to ensure that the structures interfaced
seamlessly. All in all, the beautiful result confirms that the new
Ronald McDonald House is in the right place at the right time. The new
facility offers a play room, garden, salon, computer lab, basketball
court, kitchens, study space, and 47 private accommodations all arranged
around an open-air courtyard. Utilizing the principles of green design,
the project has many elements that make it a candidate for consideration
for LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Joseph Wong
Design Associates provided architectural services. Burkett & Wong

Engineering and SC Engineers provided Mechanical Engineering services.
