SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A. -- On May 5, 2011 Joseph Wong FAIA was invited to speak for the San Diego Housing Federation's Roundtable Conference on the subject of Design Considerations in High Rise Affordable Housing. Having recently completed the 16th & Market Affordable Housing Complex and currently in the process of designing the 15th & Commercial Housing Complex and the Atmosphere Project at 4th, 5th, and Beech Avenue, Mr. Wong was able to speak to this topic of Design Considerations with a substantial amount of expertise.
He joined the group of panelists along with Jeff Graham from Centre City Development Corporation and Lori Saldate and Mathew Packard from Father Joe's Villages. They each spoke specifically about their unique perspectives on High Rise Affordable Housing, informing and educating fellow designers and developers from a design standpoint, City perspective, and tenant services aspects, respectively.
Mr. Wong touched on topics such as density, open space, user needs, structure, amenities, exterior design, interior design, and construction/durability. He concluded with a brief overview of the design process and an alternative solution to high-rise. Overall it was a profitable and beneficial time for all who attended.
