Joseph Wong Design Associates to Design Two Hotels on Shelter Island

San Diego, CA -- Joseph Wong Design Associates has been retained to design two hotels on Shelter Island beside San Diego Bay. The two new hotels will be developed out the renovation and remodel of the former Kona Kai Resort. New construction, new landscaping, enhancement of the public promenade, expanded amenities and upgraded offerings will allow the hotels to offer a wider range of services and recreational activities.

Plans for the $35 million expansion and upgrade of the Shelter Pointe Resort include the construction of two new three-story hotel buildings accommodation approximately 158 guest rooms and suites, a new swimming pool, the construction of a new 230-space parking garage with a subterranean level and three above-grade levels including the construction of a new surface parking lot of approximately 184 spaces as well as the resurfacing and restriping of the existing parking spaces. The expansion will include a new lobby, gourmet restaurant, and banquet/conference space and spa amenities. In the existing hotel building, a remodel the lobby and port cóchere complement the new construction. New landscaping, art, and a walkway will enhance the bay front experience for hotel guests and members of the public.

The $8 million reconstruction and remodel of the Island Palm Hotel will include a new three-story hotel building of approximately 25,600 square feet that includes 48 guest rooms plus marina offices and facilities, remodeling of the existing building to provide 77 guestrooms, a 1,560 square-foot two-story main lobby, new elevator system, new kitchen and support areas, approximately 1,330 square-foot dining area, room, restrooms and administrative offices and new exercise room. In addition, the public promenade will be widened to a width of approximately 18-feet and improved with a 5-foot wide meandering concrete sidewalk, 13 feet of landscape areas, as well as new signage, bench seating, and public art.
